Transcription for Academic Research and Long-Form Interviews

Discover how researchers, academics, and insight teams turn raw interviews into structured data with high-quality transcription.

Transcription for Academic Research and Long-Form Interviews

From qualitative interviews to focus groups and oral histories, research projects generate hours of rich conversation. Without reliable transcription, that insight is locked away in audio files, hard to search and even harder to code. Professional transcription unlocks that data and makes it usable for analysis, publications, and teaching.

Why researchers depend on structured transcripts

Academic projects often have complex ethical and methodological requirements. You may need an accurate record of participants' words, but you also need to protect identities and manage access carefully. A generic automatic transcription tool rarely meets those standards on its own, especially when working with multiple languages, accents, or technical terminology.

Our approach balances verbatim detail—capturing every meaningful utterance—with readability. For coding and thematic analysis, researchers often prefer verbatim transcripts, including pauses and hesitations. For public-facing outputs, a clean read version may be more appropriate. We can deliver both, derived from the same underlying recording.

Transcription that fits into your analysis workflow

We structure transcripts to work well in qualitative analysis tools such as NVivo, Atlas.ti, or Dedoose. Speaker labels and timestamp markers make it easy to navigate recordings while you code. If your study uses structured question sets, we can format transcripts so that each question and answer is easy to identify when building codebooks.

For longitudinal research, we can maintain consistent naming conventions across multiple waves of interviews, keeping participants and sessions aligned over time. This saves hours of manual relabelling and reformatting later on.

Case study: postgraduate research project

A postgraduate student approached us with more than 30 one-hour interviews spanning three countries and multiple accents. The recordings included background noise, overlapping speech, and domain-specific jargon. Automated tools produced transcripts that were too noisy to use.

By combining careful human transcription with researcher-supplied glossaries, we delivered clean, structured transcripts that could be imported directly into NVivo. The student saved weeks of manual correction and could focus on analysis rather than file prep, ultimately submitting a stronger dissertation with precise, well-cited quotes.

Features that support ethical and high-quality research

  • Confidential handling of recordings, with small-team access and NDA support where required.
  • Flexible styles (verbatim and clean read) depending on whether you're analysing, publishing, or presenting.
  • Multiple export formats suited to analysis tools and word processors.
  • Optional anonymisation for external sharing or publication.

From raw audio to publishable insight

Because Pat Media Works is a design and media studio as well as a transcription partner, we can help you take the next step after transcription. That might mean designing data visualisations for your findings, structuring a report, or creating presentation-ready slides for conferences and internal reviews.
